The Ponease Scam #2 – The Fallout

ByHorse Gurl

June 26, 2024

Unsurprisingly, the shit really hit the fan after I published the first article about this.

And over the last week, I’ve had the absolute pleasure of listing 40 of my favourite fake profiles here and got to have some really fun messenger conversations with people.

And while the podcast is still a while away – I thought you might want to know what the fallout has been.

Ponease Ingredients

Since exposing the scam, the greatest concern for people has been what’s actually in it.

And finally, a few days ago, a list of ingredients was announced by Ponease.

It was at this time that we were introduced to the secret, missing ingredient called ‘rock mineral powder’

Fake profile Sarah Hughes had to make this announcement as her fellow admin Edward with an S has been debunked by KER.

On that note- KER have reached out to advise that the mysterious ‘Edwards Stephen’ the Ponease advocate extraordinaire – does not now, and has not ever worked for Kentucky Equine Research.

Yikes… that must be awkward for someone 😳

Ponease Influencers

When it comes to some of the ‘real’ people associated with the brand, this is where it gets a bit gross.

Because many of Ponease’s brand ambassadors have doubled down with their support.

For example Stephen Pool Dressage’s horses apparently ‘feel fantastic’ after being on this rock mineral powder which is powder made from rocks….and I find that a bit weird.

But then again, I’ve been known to score a 2 in dressage… So there’s still a lot I have to learn about that sport.

Another avid supporter is a child influencer, who’s profile I can’t bring myself to share. She’s no doubt being scripted by her ‘Momager’ and it’s agonizing to watch.

What’s odd is none of these influencers seem to have done any due diligence on the product. They’ve got these audiences that they’re apparently grateful for.. but by way of return seem to be pushing an unproven, overpriced product down their throats.

Even with the obvious breach of consumer protection laws, you have to wonder what their other sponsoring brands would think about this.

Again.. it’s about that integrity isn’t it?

Ponease Distributors

Now to the international on-sellers.

And full disco here…The one I’m most irritated with is the the Australian supplier.

Her name is Annette Wilson and her business is called Applied Posture Riding.

Admittedly though, it’s personal… She’s been calling me a liar and stealing my images – so I can appreciate that it’s more a ‘me’ thing than a concern for the public.

However, you might find it interesting that Annette is one of the lucky few to see the scientific evidence relating to the rock mineral powder which is powder made from rocks.

Hang on. WHAT IN THE SCIENCE FUCKERY OF SCIENCE DOES THAT EVEN MEAN? 🤣

So if you’re in Australia and looking to see where you can buy some Ponease… Pop over to her website where she is still pledging her support.

News from New Zealand is that Ponease has been shipped around the country with glued on labels – and at the time of writing – you can still buy 5L of Ulc FX for the princely sum of $535 🤷‍♀️

Over in the USA, the waters get a little murky because the distributor there is Pamela Wilson from Pamela Equestrian. Her connection to the Ponease Scamily goes waaaaay back so you can understand why she’s staying staunch.

Two days ago, I asked Pamela to confirm whether she still intended to continue selling the product. And while I didn’t get a response to the question, I DID get a notification that she was peering into my LinkedIn profile.

It was odd.. but hey, I’d probably do the same 🤣🤷‍♀️

And look, I do understand that these people have costs to recoup- because I’m in that boat too, remember.

But what I find troubling here, is that they’re doing that by perpetuating the deception and passing the problem onto their customers – instead sucking it up or piffing it back to Ponease to sort out.

Lorraine Hughes MSc & ‘Feeding Horses With Ulcers’ Group

Lorraine has finally made admissions (of sorts) that she has received ongoing commission for spruiking products in her supposedly impartial group.

Though she seems to insist that she only took payment from distributors -and never Ponease themselves.

But as you can see here, that’s just another lie.

But that’s all by the by.. because I noticed this morning exactly how enormous this lady’s bollocks are.

I mean, I know I’ve been lobbing some big grenades lately…. but sheesh, she’s made some very, VERY bold claims and I can only imagine, she must have some deep pockets to do so.

See, Kentucky Equine Research is a world leading equine nutrition and research organisation and they’re a big deal.

Actual research with actual scientists is what they do…

They use this knowledge – among other things – to create evidence backed products to improve the digestive health of horses.

However, according to Lorraine – a certified equine nutritionist and PhD Student (still listed on Hartpury University’s website) – the KER product Equishure is significantly inferior to another product she constantly spruiks.

Gee I hope that commission is enough to find herself a damn fine lawyer 😳

This conversation went on and on this morning.. with Lorraine claming that Equishure is expensive and ‘doesn’t do much’ compared to the product she has a vested interest in.

And daaaaamn *deep whistles*… They’re some big shots fired 😳

Because not only is this woman spreading completely inaccurate information, she’s minimising the work of people that are legitimately advancing our understanding of equine nutrition.

Anyhoo, if there’s one big moral to this story – let it be this. Do your own research and look for evidence when it comes to the stuff you put in your horse’s mouth.

If you’re interested, I can do a follow up article to decipher supplement research and figure out what kind of evidence is worthwhile….I can speak with a few of these smart science folk and compile it into something that people like you and me can understand 😜

So if you think that will be helpful, let me know in the comments 👇

What’s next?

Aside from the podcast – I’m drawing a line through Ponease and once we’ve compiled a brief, the authorities can take it from there.

Next up, I’m at a crossroads – and this is where you come in…

I’ve been looking into a few other brands and with one in particular, I’ve found a chemtrail of collapsed companies, unpaid debts and general shit-stain behaviour by the people behind it.

But here’s the problem…

On the one hand, I very much care about where I spend my money and would never, knowingly support humans like that… but on the other hand, I’ve been described as toxic & dramatic for looking into it.

So this begs the question.

Is this something you would care about – or is it just getting petty?

Lately I’ve been giving a lot of thought about why people don’t speak up.. and why women in particular are told to be quiet and that it’s unpleasant to be outspoken.

But I’m ALSO recognising that I could have swung too far the other way…

Because let’s not forget, my current committee of daytime advisors all have four legs and a tail – so I could just be getting carried away and peering down a rabbit hole that’s of no actual interest or benefit to anyone else.

When it comes to horse feed & supplements – are you primarily interested in the products and products alone – or would you be interested to hear the stories about what’s behind the scenes?

In all honestly, half of me wouldn’t be sad if we were ‘one and done’ on the scammy supplement space. I could go back to cutting edge articles about dimply thighs and what it’s like eating shit in front of Lucinda Green (twice) 🤣

What do you reckon?

I value your opinion and won’t be butt-hurt either way. Please comment below or send me an email if you’d rather keep your thoughts more private.

Last but not least I would like to thank the team of behind the scenes sleuths who have assisted with bringing this story to light. The screenshotters, the secret group infiltrators and the sciencey stuff translators….

And my top secret, Scientific Geek Correspondent – especially to you 🙏

Your help has been invaluable and it would not have been possible to get this story out without you 🤗

The horse world is a better place for your efforts 🙏

With many thanks – Jemima & The Egg 🕵️‍♀️

P.S. I lied.

This was not the end 😳

See what happened when we unearthed their ‘secret’ scientific report in this article.

  1. I’d like to know about any products that have no science behind their products but promotes it as though they do… sadly I had fallen for Lorraine’s advice and spent a lot of money on both Ponease and Equinectar so I feel duped and a fool! and as the saying goes a fool and his money is easily parted! 🙈

    1. I’m absolutely sick of paying a fortune for things to help my horse that actually have no benefit & could potentially make him worse! I too have spent £££ on ponease & EquiNectar to name but a few. Mostly on the back off the horses with ulcers group,
Now my head is battered that I’ve been a fool.

Thank you for standing up & speaking out.
There would be no Me too movement if one brave woman didn’t stand up and speak out. Although non comparable, you’re doing an amazing job with smashing open what seems to be a monopoly of scams in the horse world. My eyes have been open!

  2. Do it! I’m following this issue avidly. You’re absolutely right, women are always told to “be quiet” and “be nice” and I think that’s just wrong. People need to speak up when we see bad behavior! Also, I’d love to be able to decode ingredient lists. 😁

    1. There needs to be more exposure, we are getting conned and the Conners know we desperately want the best for our horses, please keep exposing the truth.

  3. I believe you have become Alice in Wonderland and that rabbit Warren has become very deep with many different tunnels.
I believe you are doing the right thing in exposing Ponease and it shows how many people get sucked into feeding products to their horses without knowing exactly what is in it and that it could be harmful to their horses as well.
Although I want you to continue with this investigation, and I to have become overly invested in the story and the process, but if you take this investigation further into other companies etc, that you may antagonise the wrong sort of people…….but I could be over thinking things too!!

  4. Keep going! This is awesome! We need to name, shame and share the ongoing false advertising going on in this industry, especially when it comes to gut health!

  5. Do it for sure. The horse feed and supplement industry is a bloody scary place with pretty much 0 regulation. Some feed and supplement companies are just out to make a buck and too bad if what is in the product is not beneficial for our horses. A big list of ingredients looks impressive, doesn’t matter if its not in a form your horse can absorb or be of an amount that is useful. You can bet your bottom dollar you’re paying through the nose for it! And all the cheap by products that are now going into horse feeds?

  6. Yes for the supplement breakdowns/what actually works with real science behind it! Please please please!

  7. Great articles! We definitely need to know more about the false claims of equine products. Dr David Marlin is a scientist (founder of Science Supplements although no longer owns it) who could be a great form of support in your quest. Good luck, go Gurl x

  8. Yes! Keep going! Here u was berating myself that I couldn’t find the money to pay the exorbitant amount for Ponease for my ulcer prone horse, and feeling like a crap owner for it (because who doesn’t want to give their hose the best chance at life and living comfortably). Now I no longer feel like crap and very happy I didn’t have to hide the cash I would have found and spent from my husband for a product that has no scientific basis! Please help ensure I don’t get pulled in to another scammy supplement or spend a heap of money I don’t have trying to do what is best for my horse….love your work!

  9. I’ve been following along this journey, and i think people need to speak up more! We need more evidence based articles and research to even think about accepting those very bold statements above from said dodgy product sellers. I would be very interested in a comparison of similar products with the science, evidence and peer reviewed literature behind them ☺️

  10. There are way too many supplements clogging up the market that are pure placebo, overpriced crap. They need to be called out. We spend so much money on our babies, it should be well spent. While it’s our job to do our research and be informed, companies that are pushing product should at least be honest about the content of their powders and potions. Keep doing what you’re doing sis!

  11. Transparency and honesty are getting harder to find in cyberspace. Keep at it if you have the will. I’d never heard of Ponease but can see how enchanting the experts and influencers can be when we are desperate for answers.

  12. Yes!!! Horses are $$$ creatures and to think precious money is being wasted just makes me sad and a bit pissed off (ok, maybe a lot pissed off). I have never bought the product but wondering just where I’ve wasted my cash…

  13. I have concerns that 100X in the US is a similar situation. Would love to see the investigation on that company.

  14. Please continue to expose these people. The supplement industry is a minefield as it is, without people flagrantly breaking the rules around marketing and giving themselves an unfair competitive edge.

  15. Please keep going – not only so that I can enjoy your fabulous writing style but also to help avoid being duped in future due to pure desperation to help my horse, as so many others have been. I am in the UK and after 3 years of scoping, repeated ulcer treatment, injections etc etc in desperation I tried Ponease and Equinectar. My gut (excuse the pun) told me, a well educated company director who deals with regulation in financial services, that the so called ‘independent’ facebook group was more like a cult and these 2 products looked like a text book example of pyramid selling scam as what responsibly minded horse owner would tell people to not bother with scoping or calling out a vet and to just use these miracle cures? PLEASE keep going and thank you for exposing this cult for what it really is 🙂

  16. Yes to the supplement science so long as it’s not a negative influence on your life. Our furry friends deserve better than overpriced goblin dust.
As a swabbing steward it’s also important to keep in mind some of these ‘natural’ products may contain substances above the threshold of the FEI substances list & people don’t always consider that when feeding products.
Thanks for all your sleuthing and sifting everyone ☺️

  17. Hi Jemima and egg,

Good on you for speaking out. Supplements have all sorts of things and I often wonder if people looked them up. There is one with slaked lime in it and I looked it up and decided that I didn’t want to feed it to my horses. I really couldn’t work out from my research what slaked lime would do. Anyway I think people just don’t have enough chemistry knowledge to understand. So I applaud you taking this stand.

  18. Please keep doing what you’re doing Jemima. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve contacted a company to ask about what is actually in their product and can they send me a link so I can read the data supporting their claims.
I’ve had silence, I’ve had abuse, I’ve had answers that don’t in anyway answer the question and I’ve even had “ well that’s a trade secret “ which I assume means that they would have to kill me if they told me.
    Horses are expensive
Horse feed and supplements are expensive. I want to know what I’m paying for !!

  19. Yessss a real life Robin hood… dive down that rabbit hole and expose the skullduggery please my dopamine circuit and wallet will benefit.

  20. I would definitely like to know more!! I personally think that Ponease is just the tip of the iceberg of scam supplements.

Also Equinectar gifted me a huge tub about 4ish years ago for my team chasing horse. But I didn’t ask many questions. I was younger and excited that a brand was reaching out to me!! I’d be interested to know more about them too.

And as for staying quiet, why? Speak your mind, find us the sciency science data that even my simple mind can understand.
I for one appreciate everything you are doing.

  21. I’d love to know more in-depth information about all supplements and feed, there are far too many charlatans out there ripping us off. Please keep going. I’m from New Zealand.
